Diffusing an anotomical time bomb became possible in Pakistan

First Successful implantation of the endovascular stent graft was performed at Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital, Islamabad by Dr. Syed Naseem Haider Vascular and Endo vascular Surgeon for this deadly anatomical time bomb called abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Speaking after procedure Dr. Naseem said that The Aortic Aneurysm is due to the weakening in the wall of body’s largest blood vessels. If left untreated, the growing bubble would likely to burst without warning someday, causing massive bleeding, followed by shock and almost certain death. These time bombs don’t go away by themselves.

Conventional surgery to repair this aortic aneurysm is associated with lots of complications and 5% risk of death. The new less invasive surgery called Endo Vascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) has really changed the management of these patients. In this new technique, the repair is done with specially designed polyester hose which is loaded into a tiny sleeve and snaked to the aneurysm through a blood vessel in the leg. Surgeon insert a catheter into the femoral arteries in the legs and use radiography to guide the hose tightly bound in a little bundle into the damaged area of the aorta. Once the hose in the right place, they remove the sleeve, and the sheath springs open to hug the wall of aorta. Surgical hooks on the hose grab the wall and affix the patch. The results are dramatically different from those of open surgery. Most patients eat solid food for the dinner on the night of surgery and go home within next two-three days.

Quaid-e-Azam international hospital has become the pioneer institution for this kind of less invasive surgery. It can now offer this less invasive surgery for any kind of aortic pathology where possible. Quaid-e-Azam international Hospital has a team of qualified vascular and endovascular surgeon, cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologist, trained radiologist, anesthetist and fully equipped theaters and vascular lab.
Dr. Shaukat Ali Bangash founder & CEO of Quaid-e-Azam International Hospital congratulated Dr. Naseem Haider and his team for performing such a unique procedure in QIH.
